Jawai, in Rajasthan, offers a thrilling and unique wildlife experience distinct from India’s usual safaris. Unlike parks or reserves, Jawai’s rugged hills, scrubland, and the dam area are where leopards roam freely and coexist with local Rabari herders. Our driver, Rupesh, was born in Jawai and knows the terrain, leopard behavior, and ecosystem intimately. Thanks to his skills, we spotted Nilam, a female leopard well-known among locals. I grew up near Jawai, in Falna, unaware of the beauty around it. A chance visit to the Jawai Dam led me to discover this gem.
